Not Your Regular Wallet Safety Guide

Safety Has No Substitute

You know nothing about crypto wallet safety, but that’s OK!

Scams/hacks have been increasing since 2022. In fact the top 3 hacks in Crypto’s history happened in 2022 and it has not stopped even into 2023.

But that’s not your fault.

A big part of personal protection is prevention 🛡️

Your future self will thank you for investing 5-mins into this guide 🤝

So you think you're good. Hacks/scams won't happen to you?

Wrong
Nobody is immune💉

In June 2023, BitBoy got his Twitter account hacked.

Exploiting the recent meme-coin mania, the hacker posted a scam token contract via BitBoy's Twitter account.

Victims who interacted with the contract had their wallets drained.

Even founders of top NFT projects and Crypto experts have fallen victim to scams.

Kevin Rose, the founder of Moonbirds, got his wallet drained from a phishing scam in early 2023.

And he was one of the good founders. Bad thing can happen to good people it seems…🤷🏻‍♂️

Got your attention now? 👀 👀

So what can you do? How can you protect yourself?

Weirdly, it’s a lot easier than you might think.

What? Don’t believe me? Then read on!

Let’s start with some basic housekeeping rules 🏡

🔹Record your seed phrase non-digitally and store it safely

  • Write it on paper, carve it on metal, embroid it, Davinci Code it. Make sure that only YOU have access.

🔹Use a hardware wallet to store your assets offline

  • You can start with the most reputable wallet in the space, Ledger

Basic wallet safekeeping 🔐

🔹User a burner wallet

What the hell does that mean?

Use a fresh wallet every time you connect your wallet to sites you aren't familiar with.

What the hell does that mean?

Go to Metamask, click ‘Add Account’. That’s how you create a new wallet. Use that to connect to any websites you’re not familiar with.

Can’t lose any assets if there are no assets to begin with.

Remember, never connect your main wallet with a website you’re not familiar with!

Advanced wallet safekeeping 🔐

🔹Delegate your wallet

Delegatecash allows you to delegate ownership of any NFT in your main wallet to any other wallet.

Once delegated, you can use a delegated burner wallet for any token-gated activities like airdrop claims or WL mints.

And because the burner wallet doesn’t own any actual assets, in event you fall for a scam, you never ever expose your main wallet to any potential hacks or scams.

Basic due diligence 🧐

The most difficult of all the safety methods.

🔹Always verify the authenticity of a website before you connect your wallet
🔹Official project discords are a great resource for 'official links'
🔹The community always posts potential scam accounts as alerts

Take a couple minutes and do those checks before connecting your wallet to any website that claims to be from your NFT community.

Saves you a lifetime of regrets.

Advanced due diligence 🧐🧐

🔹Use tools that protect you before making a transaction
🔹Try out Pockeruniverse

They’ll require you to read the alerts before you can proceed with any transactions.

Don't RUSH, read it!

It’ll tell you what assets are going IN and OUT of your wallet. If anything’s amiss, REJECT transaction and you’ll be safe!

Wallet safety is knowledge you don't think you need until you do, which is too late.

Keep yourself educated and stay up to date on best practices 🏫

The folks at BoringSecDAO have free courses just for that.

They’ll guide you through what are the common scams, what to lookout for, and how to avoid it.

You get an NFT certification for completing the course too.

Could potentially add it to your resume #justsaying

Ar…dammit...you got hacked 😩

🔹Recognise there's little you can do due to the blockchain's finality
🔹Anyone who claims to be able to help is 99.9999% FAKE. DO NOT LISTEN to them
🔹Next, revoke as many token approvals as you can via Revoke.Cash
🔹This means, severing all previously approved contracts to your wallet, starting with the most recent
🔹You won’t save assets already lost, but you’ll save assets you still have
🔹Final step is to move on to accepting the expensive lesson learned

At this point. Stay calm, because nothing can be done.

Yes, it’s a harsh reality. Let that be a lesson because you probably did not follow all the steps above.
